The Berkshire Badgers bowling team bowled well Feb. 4 at Skylanes in Garrettsville. In fact, in the inaugural Chagrin Valley Conference Bowling Tournament, two Badgers finished in the top three of the Chagrin Valley Conference and were awarded first team All-CVC.
Mac Conrad finished as the runner-up in the CVC girls individual bowling tournament, which consisted of a three-game series.
For the three games, Conrad rolled a 165, 167 and a 202 for a 534 series, averaging a 178.
After placing at the tournament and being awarded first-team All-CVC, Conrad talked about her performance. She came into the conference tournament excited to participate, she said, and was looking forward to trying her best.
As the tournament began, Conrad said she faced some adversity in figuring out the lanes, but her coach helped her make adjustments.
This effort led Conrad to achieving her all-time personal best game of 202.
“I am just very proud of myself, proud of my team — they were very supportive,” Conrad said.
Also leading the Badger girls were Meagan Passow, who bowled a 167 game, and Alie Ruchalski, who bowled a 165.
Leading the boys team was Noah Valentino, who finished first team All-CVC and placed third in the tournament.
To earn first-team honors, Valentino bowled games of 203, 216 and 204 for a 622 series and averaged 207.
Also contributing high games for the Badger boys were Levi Rohl, who rolled a 210; Mario Romagni, who bowled a 191, and Ryan Kessinger, who bowled a 189.
Valentino said the team wasn’t sure what to expect since this was the first-ever CVC Conference tournament.
However, Valentino expressed that his ability to stay relaxed and calm allowed him to adjust to the lanes and perform well.
“Staying loose, just kind of feeling how the lanes are, that’s what really made me excel today,” Valentino said.
After the three-game individual blocks which determined individual champions, each CVC team bowled six Baker games in which each bowler on the team each bowled two frames per game.
The Badgers boys team’s top Baker games were a 205 and a 183.
For the tournament, the boys team accumulated 3,602 pins, which gave them a fifth-place CVC conference tournament finish.
The Badgers bowled very well, as only 16 pins separated the third and fifth place finishers.
Berkshire’s girls team also bowled six Baker games, their best scores being 149 and 140.
After the Baker games, the Badger girls finished third in the conference with a pin total of 2,719.
Berkshire Badgers Head Bowling Coach Kevin Johnson felt happy with his team’s performance.
“The girls went third (and) the boys went fifth in the CVC, so I can’t be more proud of them,” Johnson said.
Conrad and Valentino both bowled very well, he emphasized, especially in converting spare opportunities.
“They just filled frames,” Johnson said. “I always tell them ‘pick up your spares,’ and they did. And look what happened. I’m pretty proud of them.”
With the regular season coming to an end, Berkshire would take on Kenston (Feb. 6), Lakeside (Feb. 7) and Jefferson (Feb. 8) before participating in sectionals.
