Bombers girls golf had a great week!

Going in with a perfect 11-0 record, Coach Kip Freeman’s team just needed one more victory — Sept. 20 over the Chardon Hilltoppers at Punderson Golf Course — to finish its regular season undefeated. Additionally, the Bombers had the opportunity on Sept. 22 to win the Western Reserve Conference championship.

Led by seniors Emme Gilbert, Samantha Bergansky, Caroline Beeman and Annie Costello, Kenston defeated Chardon, 194-236.

“It was our last match of the season, and it was pretty much a must-win for us to go undefeated for the season,” Freeman said. “They’re playing much better. They’re hitting it better. There are still a few things we need to iron out…but right now they are all striking it much better than they were a few weeks ago.

“I am positive that were going to take care of business.”

Then, two days later, not only did the Bombers complete their regular season undefeated, they also won the conference championship.

Taking medalist honors for the match vs Chardon was Gilbert, who shot a 45. Finishing in second and third place individually were Kenston’s Bergansky, who shot a 46, and Caroline Beeman, who finished with a 47.

After the match Gilbert and Bergansky talked about the things that went well and what they were looking forward to as they try to win the conference tournament and move through sectionals and districts.

“I think today was a good warmup for the WRC, which is Thursday,” said Bergansky. “Our goal today was just to keep focused and try to get the best scores. Happily, we were playing on the front nine, which we all love a lot more than our back nine.

“I think today was just a great day, and it was our last time playing together as seniors at Kenston.”

Gilbert added, “It think it was definitely up and down today, but we definitely stayed focused, which is what we have been working on, so I think it was great practice for the WRC on Thursday.”

Emme Gilbert medaled at the conference tournament — the girls team’s second WRC championship in a row. The Bombers won shooting a team total 378 and defeating Mayfield by seven strokes.

In addition, Gilbert was named Player of the Year for the conference, and Freeman was named Coach of the Year.

Kenston’s girls golf now moves on to the OHSAA sectional tournament.
