The Kenston Bombers and Chardon Hilltoppers boys soccer teams both pitched shut-outs this week.
The Bombers first shut out the visiting Hilltoppers in a dominating offensive and defensive performance led by senior captain Parker Munday on Sept. 27, 4-0. But the Hilltoppers regrouped and gained shut-out victories over Streetsboro and Crestwood later in the week.
“Coming into this game coming off two losses and a win on Saturday, we knew we needed to have a good game today,” Munday said. “I think we played well, moving the ball around the field. We got some players back, so I think we’re moving forward pretty fast.”
Kenston Head Coach Trip Roney added, “I’m really happy about how we controlled the pace of the game, and the possession was fantastic.”
As Kenston controlled possession and the pace of the game, the Bombers methodically created scoring opportunities throughout. The offense scored early in the game on sophomore Grady Flynn’s second goal of the season.
“(The coaches) kind of just told me to put the ball low,” said Flynn. “It skipped in there (and I) stayed down on it and put it into the net.”
The Bombers scored again with 13 minutes left in the first half on Munday’s first of two goals on the night.
“Those were rebounds that I got in on, and just crashed the net,” said Munday.
In the second half, the Bombers took a 3-0 lead on sophomore Jack Purcell’s first goal of the season.
“I received it in the corner of the box, I took a touch, then just ripped it,” said Purcell. “I didn’t really care where it went.”
The Bombers scored their final goal late in the game on Munday’s second goal of the match to make the final score 4-0.
Kenston is now 8-4-2 on the season and has been led offensively by Munday (28 points – 13 goals, 2 assists), Carter Flynn (18 points – 7 goals, 4 assists), Grady Flynn (5 points – 2 goals, 1 assist), Trent Kreuger (5 points – 1 goal, 3 assists), Ethan Gaskins (3 points – 1 goal, 1 assist), Ewan Paterson (3 points – 1 goal, 1 assist) and Purcell (3 points – 1 goal, 1 assist).
In net, the Bombers have been led by Jonas Grunden (45 saves) and Wyatt Koenig (7 saves).
After losing to the Bombers, the Hilltoppers finished their week with shut-out victories over Streetsboro (1-0) and Crestwood (4-0).
