So far on the season, the Chagrin Falls girls golf team is 5-2-1, having obtained victories over Orange, Cuyahoga Heights and Hawken, plus two over Lutheran West.
The Tigers traveled to Shawnee Hills Golf Course on Aug. 29 to take on the Independence Blue Devils in their seventh match of the season and played well, shooting a team total score of 198.
However, the Independence Blue Devils prevailed in the match, shooting a 181.
Chagrin Falls’ program is led by alum Kristin Reboul, who finished as the OHSAA state runner-up in the Girls Golf State Championship in 1987. Reboul then played college golf at Penn State University.
After the round, Coach Reboul talked about competing against the Blue Devils.
“This is an experienced team with a lot of heart,” she said. “We’re trying to give our best today.
“We have a great mixture of experience and potential. Five and six are a sophomore and junior that are just gaining experience and playing better and better everyday.”
Leading the way for the Tigers was Samantha Holtz, who shot a 47. In addition to playing golf for Chagrin Falls, Holtz is a state championship diver who has committed to Harvard, where she will be part of the swimming and diving team.
“Today’s match was absolutely wonderful,” Holtz said. “Independence is such a great team to play with, and out here in Shawnee it’s beautiful weather, a great course. It really was just a pleasure to be out here today.”
In particular, Holtz talked about how the team worked together to prepare for the match. She noted that team members met before the match to discuss goals for the round. Specifically, they discussed what they wanted to accomplish both individually and as a team.
“We just kind of went into it with a great attitude, and it is always great to be out here with these girls,” Holtz said.
Reagan Burnight also shot a 47 for the Tigers. Burnight noted that her short game was going well in the match. In particular, she felt she was putting and driving the ball well.
“It’s been going good, I like it,” Burnight said of the season, noting that she hopes to continue to improve her game and spend time with the team.
Also contributing to the Chagrin Falls team score were Ellie Conrad and Gracie Ryan, who both shot a 52.
Believing that it is nice to have upperclassmen leading the team, with four seniors playing against Independence, Holtz said she feels her senior year of golf is off to a great start.
“We’re enjoying practices, and getting out into those matches and playing really well,” Holtz said.
Also optimistic about the season to date: Coach Reboul.
“The season’s been great,” she said. “We played a couple tournaments, and we’re looking forward to post-season and everything else.”
After a long holiday weekend, the Tigers would return to the course Sept. 6 to face Independence at The Country Club in Pepper Pike, then Sept. 7 to face Orange at Fowler’s Mill Golf Course.
