Chardon High School inducted two new members into its athletic hall of fame last weekend.

Ed Huxel was a three-sport athlete, earning varsity letters in football, wrestling and track before graduating in 1967.

Huxel was a senior captain of the football and wrestling teams, and a two-time all-conference offensive lineman. Huxel went on to wrestle at Ohio State University and earned a degree in biochemistry, as well as a master’s degree from Oregon State University and an engineering master’s from U.C. Davis.

He is the fourth Huxel brother to be entered into the hall of fame, and lives in Saginaw, Texas, with his wife, Jennifer.

“I’ve come a long way for this,” he said.

Danny Anderson was inducted as a three-sport athlete in football, soccer and wrestling. Anderson was best known for his wrestling legacy, qualifying for the state meet as a sophomore. He won the 1997 Division 2 championship as a senior with a 38-0 record at 145 pounds.

Anderson also wrestled at Mount Union College. He lives in?Painesville Township with his girlfriend, Sharon.

The entire 1998 football team was inducted. That year the Hilltoppers reached the Division 2 state championship game, finishing as the second best Division 2 team in the state.

Going undefeated in the Premier Athletic Conference, the?Hilltoppers outscored opponents 174-7 in those games. The team also beat Erie Cathedral Prep, St. Edward’s and Steubenville.

Kevin Platz, Scott Mackar, current Chardon head coach Mitch Hewitt and Chris Dackewicz were all chosen as All-Ohio players.

“It’s nice to see everyone,” said Mackar. “I don’t think we’ve all seen each other since high school.”

Mackar noted Memorial Field and its field turf. The 1998 team was the last team to play on the old field.

Marc Burr was a right tackle on that team.

“We all got on each other’s nevers, and each other’s cases,” said Burr. “But at the end of the day, we were family.”

Four other alumni were selected based on accomplishments to their professions and communities. They were Helen Mansfield, Nancy Pokorny, Daniel Gray and Emanuel McGregor.

McGregor is in the Guinness Book of World Records as having the longest-ever career as a lawyer. Just recently retiring, McGregor was a lawyer since 1948.

“I feel exhilarated,” said Mc-Gregor. “It was unexpected, but not unappreciated.”

Three of his grandchildren held an umbrella for McGregor, shielding him from the rain.

“I think that at his age, to still be accomplishing things is pretty cool,” said Rebecca Roach, joined by Ryan and Ricky Roach. McGregor is 95.
