Sean Doyle’s senior year of wrestling is off to a great start as the Kenston Bomber is currently ranked 10th in the state.
On Dec. 16th, Doyle won the 285-pound weight class of the Solon Comet Classic and then continued his excellent senior season on December 21 as the Bombers traveled to Crestwood to take on the Red Devils.
Against the Red Devils, Doyle and other Bomber wrestlers won individual matches, however, the Bombers did not have their full line up available.
This allowed Crestwood to gain points through forfeits and thus claim victory.
Head coach Ricky Deubel explained that the Bombers wrestled very well in the matches in which they had wrestlers to compete.
“I think the kids wrestled well,” said Deubel. “It’s tough winning a match when you’re giving up like six forfeits like we did today. The kids that did compete, competed really well. I believe their condition was well and their constant movement was working well too.”
As coach Deubel mentioned, the Bombers that wrestled had very good matches.
In fact, three Bombers seniors, Aiden Baran, Aaron Hirt, and Sean Doyle had excellent performances against Crestwod.
Baran, Hirt and Doyle talked about their performances at the conclusion of the match.
Baran mentioned that he was excited to get out and wrestle, and that he gave it his all against the Red Devils.
During the match, Baran said that he did not expect too much since he had not wrestled in a while. Thus, his strategy was to focus on countering his opponents moves.
“Whatever the kid was going to do, I was going to counter,” Baran said. “I ended up doing that, taking a good shot.”
After Baran got a good shot and took the wrestler to the mat, it was not long before Baran got the pin.
In addition to Baran’s excellent match, senior Aaron Hirt performed well.
In achieving his victory against his Red Devils opponent, Hirt talked about the importance of utilizing the things he has learned in the wrestling room during practice and then implementing those technical and tactical elements into his performance during competition.
In particular, Hirt emphasized that in his match against his Crestwood opponent, he wanted to make sure he was applying the things he had been working on, but also not think too much about those concepts when he was actually on the mat wrestling.
Also, Hirt mentioned that during the match he was focused on enjoying wrestling and having fun competing.
In the last match of the dual meet against Crestwood, another Bomber whose senior season is off to a fun start is Sean Doyle.
Doyle said that so far this season he has been working on things that will help prepare him for the postseason.
Because of his focus on trying out new moves, Doyle knew his match against his Crestwood opponent would not be short.
“I thought it (the match) worked out,” said Doyle. “I tried a couple moves, some of them didn’t work as I wanted them to, hit a different one, and kept going. As soon as I got the green light to finish him, I pinned him. It was a good match. I had fun.”
After a short holiday break, the Bombers wrestlers will be back in action on December 28 and 29 as they host the Kenston Invitational Tournament.
