Geauga Athletes Qualify for OHSAA Regional Championships

From May 19 through 21, Geauga County athletes made a strong showing at the OHSAA district track and field championships.

Teams from Chagrin Falls, West Geauga and Hawken competed at Perry High School.

The Chagrin Falls Tigers girls team finished third, and many individual Geauga athletes also qualified for regionals.

In order to qualify for regionals, an athlete must have finished in the top four at the championships at Perry.

In the girls high jump, West Geauga athletes finished first (Megan McGinnis) and second (Keira Deister). Nora Pope from Chagrin Falls and Madde Sands from Hawken also qualified for regionals.

In the girls shot put, Gabrielle Turner (Hawken) finished second and Sarah McCourt (Chagrin Falls) finished third to qualify.

In the girls discus, Alyssa Mobley (West Geauga) finished third and Gabrielle Turner (Hawken) finished fourth.

In the girls pole vault, Natalie Zalud (Chagrin Falls) finished third, while in the boys pole vault, Ethan Metz (Hawken) finished second and Jonathan McGinnis (Chagrin Falls) finished third to qualify.

Many Geauga athletes also qualified for regionals in running events.

The Tigers girls won the 4x800m relay, while the Wolverines won the boys 4x800m relay, and the Hawks boys finished third in the 4x800m relay.

Megan McGinnis and Kate Deister (West Geauga) also qualified for regionals in the girls 110m hurdles, while Nate Bruce (third) from Chagrin Falls qualified for regionals in the boys 110m hurdles.

McGinnis also finished fourth in the girls 300m hurdles.

Leila Metres (Hawken) finished second in the girls 100m and Dominic Johnson (Hawken) finished fourth in the boys 100m to qualify.

Metres also qualified for regionals in the 200m by finishing second.

In the girls 4x200m, the Tigers finished fourth.

In the girls1600m, Mila Gresh (Chagrin Falls) qualified for regionals with a second place finish.

“It feels really good,” Gresh said. “The competition here was great. I love running against all these girls. The are so amazing, so talented.”

In the boys 1600m, Nick Garcia-Whitko (Hawken) finished second and Matthew Dienes (West Geauga) finished third to qualify.

“I’m really excited for the regional meet just because of more competition,” Garcia-Whitko said. “Overall, I’m just really excited for a good race.”

“I got myself a nice third-place finish to advance to regionals,” Dienes said. “Overall, very happy with how I did.”

The Hawken boys finished second in the 4x100m as they look to return to the state championships.

In the girls 400m, Leila Metres (Hawken) finished first and Lily Stukus (Chagrin Falls) finished third, while Leah Kler (Chagrin Falls) finished fourth in the girls 800m.

Qualifying for regionals in the boys 800m for the Wolverines were Christopher Whiting (third) and Grant Congdon (fourth).

Hawkin’s Brielle Collins qualified for regionals in the girls 3200m, while the Wolverine’s Daniel Kerns (first), and Hawkin’s Parker Carrus (second) and Tommy Mooney (third) both qualified for regionals in the boys 3200m.

In the girls 4x400m, the Tigers finished first and the Wolverines finished fourth, and the Tigers boys finished 4th in the 4x400m, to qualify.

Regionals will take place May 24 through 27.
