The Hawken football team is off to a good start this season under veteran Head Coach Mark Iammarino, in his second year at Hawken after a long and successful career at Chagrin Falls.
Hawken had won their first two games against Rhodes, 49-7, and Trinity, 48-12, both at home, going into a tough away-game matchup Sept. 1 with OHSAA Region 9 rival Gilmour.
The first half against Gilmour was very close, as Hawken only trailed by three points heading into halftime. But due to a very good second half by Gilmour — scoring 28 unanswered points — and an injury to Hawken’s starting tailback, Gilmour defeated Hawken, 41-10.
In the first half, Hawken scored on a touchdown pass from quarterback Donovan Moorehead to wide receiver Charlie Mallett, and added three more points on a field goal by Julian Javoris.
After the game, Hawken captains Luke Mangini and Lucas Brandt talked about the contest.
“We were really in there in the first half, 10-13, really fighting on defense, doing a great job on offense, getting the ball moving,” Mangini said. “This game is a big growth opportunity. This is a point in the season where we grow.
“First few games, we did a great job; first half of this game, we did a great job. And if we show that the rest of the season, there are not many teams I believe can stop us.”
Added Brandt: “Hats off to Gilmour, they’re a really, really good team. They’re well coached. First half, I thought we hung right with them. We played pretty well.”
In their season opener game against Rhodes, the Hawks ran for six touchdowns. Jordan Johnson ran for 155 yards on 13 carries and had two touchdowns.
Also leading the Hawks in rushing in the season opener were Tristen Ruffin-Williams and Luke Mangini. Ruffin-Williams gained 94 yards on 10 carries and also had a touchdown. Mangini had 91 yards on five carries and also had two touchdowns against Rhodes.
In the air against, sophomore quarterback Donovan Moorehead was 5-8 for 112 yards and a touchdown.
Moorehead connected with Charlie Mallett for a 62-yard touchdown pass, and Tommy Wright also had two catches for 27 yards.
In Hawken’s second game of the season, against Trinity, sophomore quarterback Donovan Moorehead was amazing. In accumulating a passer rating of 169.5, Moorehead was 10-11 for 204 yards and threw for five touchdowns.
Moorehead completed two touchdown passes to Luke Mangini. In addition, Moorehead connected with Mallett for a 44-yard touchdown pass, and Julian Javoris caught a 13-yard touchdown pass.
On the ground against Trinity, the Hawks were again led by Johnson, Ruffin-Williams and Mangini. Johnson carried the ball 13 times for 125 yards and a touchdown, while Ruffin-Williams gained 36 yards on six carries and Mangini had 25 yards on three carries.
The Hawks return home Sept. 8 to play Edgewood.
