Berkshire’s girls golf team hosted their Berkshire Invitational on Aug. 10, welcoming participants from Berkshire, Garfield, Kenston and Orange.
Kenston’s girls ultimately won the invitational with a team score of 201.
“It was very wonderful,” Kenston Head Coach Kip Freeman said. “It’s very nice this early in the season to get a victory.
“So I had a couple freshman that came aboard, and they’re playing my number two and three this year, and they stepped up today and they played well. And my senior, my only lettering player from last year, was co-medalist, and I had a couple surprises today, so that’s good.”
The invitational was a nine-hole match between the four schools. Four golfers from each school contributed to their team’s total score, which determined the overall winner as Kenston.
The individual medalists for the tournament were also both from Kenston. Winning medalist honors were Annika Tutzer and Stephania Mighton, who both carded 47s.
After the match, Tutzer, a senior captain, talked about her round.
“I think I did fairly good today,” she said. “I had some pretty good drives. The short game has been really good today.”
Kenston girls golf won the Western Reserve Conference last year with a mostly senior-led team. In fact, Kenston has graduated eight senior golfers since then.
However, Tutzer and Freeman are both optimistic.
“We got some really good new freshmen, so we hope to have a great team in the future as well,” Tutzer said. “Maybe we will even win the WRC again this year.”
Added her coach, “I got a couple freshman that are just starting. With graduating eight last year, I basically don’t know what I am going to get this year.”
Freeman also mentioned that he is focused on helping his players improve this year.
“We got three pretty solid players, and then I need to find that fourth person,” he said. “I got six to eight other girls that all shoot about the same; well see which one steps up.”
Berkshire’s girls golf team is also optimistic about its season ahead.
After the match, Berkshire senior captain Aurora Martin talked about this year’s team. So far, the first week of golf had been going well, despite many new players.
“A lot of our team graduated last year, so half our team are new, like freshman or first-year, so they are still learning,” Martin said. “Some of us, it’s our second or third year coming back. Hopefully this year will be good for all of us.”
Hoping to make districts this year, Martin said she is also focused on achieving all-conference honors again.
Play would resume for both teams the following week, with Kenston facing Eastlake North Aug. 14 at Lost Nation Golf Course and Berkshire facing Madison Aug. 15 at Erie Shores Golf Course.
