Multiple Geauga County girls soccer teams advanced to the district semifinals as Berkshire, Kenston and West Geauga all won OHSAA Sectional titles last week.
In addition, the Bombers advanced to the district finals Oct. 23 when they defeated the Badgers, 1-0, on an early first-half goal by sophomore Olivia Muzzio. That goal was Muzzio’s sixth goal of the season.
Muzzio described how the goal occurred.
“(For) the goal, Ashley Hunter passed me the ball, I took a touch with the outside of my left foot through two defenders, and then I just kicked it in the corner with my toe,” she said.
For the rest of the almost 80 minutes of the district semifinal game, the Bombers played great defense and did not allow a Badgers goal.
“The goal was in, I think, the second minute,” she said. “It was really early, and then we defended at a really high rate.
“The rest of that game was super great by our back line.”
Kenston Head Coach Jonathan Kostoff applauded the defense.
“Terrific defensive performances were had by Bria Devlin, Mariela Macias, Emily Phillips, Gabby Soltis and Marin Walz especially,” Kostoff said.
With the finals win, Kenston became one of only five teams in the Northeast Ohio area to make it to the championship game four years in a row, according to Kostoff.
Muzzio was very proud of the fact that her team was able to make it back to the finals this season.
“It was a really great year,” Muzzio said. “We had a lot of young players going into this season, and the young players really stepped up. With a small senior class, it was a little difficult at first, but we worked hard and made it work, and we got here (to the OHSAA District Finals). I am really proud of our team.”
After Kenston won the semifinal game, the Bombers played Alliance Oct. 26 in the district finals. They played a very good game. However, Alliance got a goal in both the first and second halves in order to claim the district title, 2-0.
“I am really proud of our group that we got here,” senior captain Emily Phillips said. “We worked really hard all season and played a super hard schedule. We just competed every day in training, and we had a lot of fun doing it. I am really proud of our group that we got to this point.
“I am so grateful for this program. It has been the most amazing four years of soccer, and we have had amazing upperclassmen that helped us along the way.
“We have been part of a great program, and I’m just so grateful.”
