The West Geauga Wolverines Girls Soccer team hosted Ursuline in the first round of the OHSAA playoffs on Oct. 14.
The Wolverines scored two goals in the first half and then added a goal in the second half to defeat Ursuline 3-0.
West Geauga Head Coach Cassidy Lewis was happy with how her team performed.
“Just a great performance by the girls overall,” said Lewis. “Getting through on the board and getting a shutout is huge in the first round of the tournament. It was a great performance by the girls today.”
As Coach Lewis mentioned, the team performed very well. In particular, the offense had an excellent game. In fact, goals were scored by Adison Cook, Amelia Zaffiro and Kendalyn Simpkins.
West Geauga scored first on freshman Amelia Zaffiro’s third goal of the season with 30:17 left in the first half.
“All three of my goals (for the season) were from Adie Cook’s corners and today she kicked it from the corner and I just volleyed it into the net,” Zaffiro said.
Added Coach Lewis, “Amelia, she’s tough on those corner’s, she’s really great on set play’s” Lewis said.
“She uses her body, and really gets herself in there, and she missed that first one, so I guess getting that goal right after she missed it, like 30 seconds later was huge for her.”
After Zaffiro scored, the Wolverines scored again when Adison Cook found the back of the net with 8:15 left in the first half.
Coach Lewis noted that Cook is the team’s leading scorer and has scored in practically every game this season.
Coach Lewis also talked about the important contributions that Cook has made to the team throughout the season.
“She has been a huge asset up top for us (this season)” Coach Lewis said.
On the season, Cook now has 14 goals. In addition, Cook also leads the team in assists with seven.
After the game, Cook talked about the team’s performance and her goal.
“I definitely think we created a lot of chances, and a lot of them were just unlucky because they should have been in the back of the net,” said Cook.
“But overall it was a really good game, especially in the conditions.”
Cook also described her goal that she had late in the first half.
“It was a beautiful ball from Kaley, and as soon as I got the trap, I knew it was going in because I saw the bottom corner open and I just tapped it right in.”
West Geauga’s final goal was scored by senior Kendalyn Simpkins with 18:36 left in the game.
After the contest, Simpkins described her goal.
“So it came off a corner kick and I was at the back post and I got it in with my left foot,” Simpkins said.
In addition to West Geauga’s three goals, their defense did not give up a goal in the defeat of Ursuline.
Coach Lewis discussed the excellent defensive performance by the Wolverines against the Fighting Irish.
“Great shutout for our defense,” said Lewis.
“Our back three has been tough. We switched to a back three midway through the season. Our back three has been tough. It’s a risky thing to do to play a back three but they do it so well. My center back Savannah Swaye does a great job to hold it back down there. We couldn’t do a three back without her.”
With the victory, West Geauga advances to play Crestwood on Oct. 18th.
