Power set the tone in this one, but ultimately, consistency decided the match.

Facing off in the No.1 singles spot, senior Griffin Vaughn of Western Reserve Academy defeated NDCL senior Christian Bittner in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-3.

Vaughn came out strong in the first set, using powerful forehands to dictate points and build momentum.

Both of his aces came in the first set, a sign of just how dominant he was early. Bittner struggled to settle in, missing his first two serves and committing several unforced errors, allowing Vaughn to take the first set 6-0.

My backhand was off,” Bittner said afterward. “I wasn’t landing the shots I usually do, which led to me getting in my head early on, which is never a good thing.”

In the second set, Bittner showed improvement, finding more consistency and beginning to extend rallies. He finished with four winners of his own, but many of his struggles remained self-inflicted, ending the match with nine unforced errors.

Vaughn matched that total, also recording nine unforced errors, but balanced it with more aggressive play, continuing to pressure Bittner with pace.

Both players found more success on their second serve than their first and were, in fact, identical on first-serve percentage, each landing 22 of 47 attempts (or 46.8 percent).

Vaughn, however, was more effective in converting points off his serve. He committed nine double faults, compared to Bittner’s 12, but despite the miscues, recovered early and maintained control of rallies.

A combination of aggressiveness and quick recovery allowed Vaughn to take the second and deciding set 6-3.

Bittner showed real improvement in his second set. His early deficit, though, just proved too much to overcome.

Vaughn’s consistency and ability to respond after mistakes helped him maintain control and close out the match in straight sets.

The Lions, now 2-2 on the year, still hope to finish in the Top 2 of the North Coast Conference.

Asked how NDCL can bounce back individually and collectively, NDCL Head Coach Alex Dowger said, “I tell the boys and the girls: work on what you can control. You can control your double faults. You can control your volleys at the net. You can control being in the right position.’

The Pioneers improved to 2-1 with Vaughn’s win.
