Willoughby Teen Dies After Car Crash in Chester

One vehicle crash sends woman to hospital.

A Willoughby woman who crashed into a utility pole on Sperry Road in Chester Township Jan. 29 passed away Thursday night after succumbing to her injuries, which included severe brain trauma.

Caitlin Skiles, 18, was traveling south of Sperry Road aroudn 10:20 p.m. when she failed to negotiate a right-hand turn on Ranch Drive and crashed into a sign, striking a utility pole off the roadway, according to a Ohio State Highway Patrol news release.

Skiles, who was driving a 2004 Toyota Camry, was not wearing her seatbelt, the patrol said, adding she was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

On her gofundme page created to help raise funds for her hospital bills, it said Skiles “suffered severe brain trauma, as well as multiple serious injuries” and was unconscious and unresponsive.

A call into the Geauga County Coroner’s office has not been returned, however, the mother of a friend of Skiles as well as the highway patrol confirmed being notified of Skiles’ passing.

The crash remains under investigation.

Chester Township Fire, Munson Township Fire and Chester police helped with the incident.
