Four-Way Speech Contest

Sophomore Josiah Cheung won first place in the Burton-Middlefield Rotary 4-Way Speech Contest that was held Feb. 22 at Welshfield Inn in Troy. He competed against students from Newbury, Cardinal and Berkshire to bring home first place.

GTV will air a recording of the event the week of Feb. 27. Josiah has been invited to compete in the District Contest on April 8 at Aurora High School.

African American Read-In

On Feb. 15, Berkshire High School students from Honors English II, Honors English III and AP English IV traveled to the Tri-C Simon & Rose Mandel Theatre in Highland Hills to participate in the third annual African American Read-In to recognize Black History Month. Students along with teachers Carrie Kleinhenz, Maria Koler and Lynn Hunter listened to distinguished members of the Cleveland community speak about the meaning of leaving a legacy. The eclectic and diverse group shared inspiring excerpts from fiction and nonfiction literature by iconic African American writers such as Niki Giovanni, Malcolm X and Louis Stokes.

Mathletes Exercise Their Skills

A Piece of Pi, Four Parts of a Whole and The Equilaterals were among six teams of fifth and sixth graders from Burton Elementary School who participated in a math problem solving tournament. The Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics sponsored the 36th annual tournament on Feb. 18.

Tournaments were held at 14 different sites throughout northeast Ohio. The purpose of the tournament was to promote enthusiasm for mathematics and to recognize students for their interest and talents in problem solving.

The students engaged in teamwork as they experienced challenging problems in a competitive setting. Various events consisted of a team problem solving round, a mental math round and a team construction activity. Funds for the tournament were once again generously provided by the Burton Elementary PTO.

Fifth-grade participants included: Anna Brown, Brooklyn Pope, Madison Rickelman, Madelyn Smetana, Emily Tessean, Nathan Vulinec, Maddie Walter, Brooklyn Barger, Evania McCandless, Mia Pirichy, Caeley Powell and Alex Sabol.

Sixth-grade participants included: Conner Gilmore, Johnny Heiden, Jenna Revak, Brendan Ward, Bleu Ceroky, Joey Czekaj, Jarrett Long, Sidney Schaden, Hannah Washell, Slade Blair, Aidan Fekete and Ellynn Weatherholt.

Third-Grade Superbowl Party

Miss Svigel’s third-graders at Ledgemont Elementary School had their own Superbowl party on Feb. 3. In the morning, they completed a STEM challenge where they had to create two field goal posts using a limited amount of supplies. They were given five large popsicle sticks, three purple popsicle sticks, newspaper, tape, a pair of scissors and a ruler. They had to make the field goal posts nearly identical in size. Then, they were each given a paper football where they had to test the best field goal distance. Afterward, they had to analyze the different results and reflect on why they made or missed field goals.

In the afternoon, the students rotated through football-themed stations, including first down, second down, third down, field goal, touchdown and halftime. First down was football multiplication roll; second down was making various words using the word footballs; third down consisted of football word problems; field goal required work with prefixes and suffixes; touch down was football team Superbowl math. During halftime, the students got to enjoy a variety of parent and teacher donated Superbowl snacks.

Students Visit Burton Health Care

Burton Elementary School Student Council members spent an evening with the residents at Burton Health Care. Student Council members each chose an artwork from their portfolio, which Mrs. Lamb then hung gallery style at Burton Health Care. The artwork will remain there for a period of time for the residents to enjoy.

Burton Elementary School art teacher Laurie Lamb and music teacher Lauren Casey worked collaboratively with Mrs. Maxwell, student council advisor, to organize the night. Mrs. Casey and the fifth- and sixth-grade band members performed for the residents. The students worked very hard on the performance and it showed. Congratulations to all who participated.
