Destination Imagination
On March 11, NDES participated in the annual Destination Imagination regional competition held at Hiram College. Representing NDES, were three teams. Mrs. Mulhull’s Pigeons of America took third place, Mrs White’s Notre Dame Smarties took second and Mrs. Wojnar’s 4 Llamas with a Stick took first place and will progress to states at Mt. Vernon Middle School on April 8.
The competition consisted of several different areas of focus: technical, scientific, fine arts, improvisational and structural learning. Over a course of several months, students were given a challenge and had to use their critical thinking, problem solving and team work to create and develop a solution to a problem and present it at the annual competition.
NDES Students Excel NEOSEF
Congratulations to the student participants of the North Eastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair held March 6-9. Conner Vieira and Isabella Atkinson received third place with a ribbon and bronze medal in their category. Meghan Bhanoo and Amy Gabrovsek received second place with a ribbon, silver medal and $25 in their category. Meghan Bhanoo also received a special award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and $100. Students who qualified for NEOSEF were identified at the 20th annual NDES Science and Engineering Fair held in January.
Established in 1953, the Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair (NEOSEF) is a non-profit, all volunteer organization, whose goal is to get young adults interested in science and engineering by participating in a science and engineering competition. The fair has been held every year since 1954 and is affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
During the four-day event, approximately 600 students from over 80 schools in the area set up their science fair displays, discuss their projects with more than 260 judges and compete for more than $20,000 in prizes. One of the most rewarding aspects of NEOSEF is the opportunity for the students to discuss their research with professional scientists and engineers from the local area.
