Google Pilot Program

Chagrin Falls Schools participated in the Google Reference District Program, a pilot program that showcased how the district is achieving exemplary things with Google tools.

The district is now one of the first districts in the country to be selected as a “Google for Education Reference School.”

“This recognition is the result of the hard work of our staff and our collective commitment to continue to move towards the personalization of learning for our students,” said district Superintendent Robert Hunt.

According to Google, these districts demonstrate excellence and thought leadership through the innovative use of technology, including G Suite for Education (formerly known as Google Apps for Education) and Chromebooks, to drive impact and positive learning outcomes.

Chagrin Falls Schools join a select group of 10 other innovative districts and independent schools around the country that will share resources, attend workshops, and give tours to other educators. They will have the opportunity to be showcased in Google for Education keynotes and presentations as well as featured in Google for Education case studies and newsletters.

CFMS Students of the Month

The mission of the Chagrin Falls Middle School Students of the Month is to acknowledge and reward students for exemplary performance.

The students depict Tiger Techniques: Think, Integrity, Grit, Effort and Responsibility.

Each month, the seventh- and eighth-grade teams collaborate and choose a male and female “Tiger of the Month” and the students receive a special treat from the PTO to take home and share with their family.

March’s Students of the Month are Madalyn Couch, Ethan Baker, Elise Concannon and Sam Crandall.

Food Service Receives Outstanding Review

The Ohio Department of Education, Office of Child Nutrition (ODE, OCN) completed an administrative review of Chagrin Falls Schools’ food service program in March.

An on-site review was conducted at Chagrin Falls Middle School on March 22. The food service program was found to be operating in compliance with federal and state requirements.

The ODE consultant noted: “The documents for the Administrative Review appeared thorough and well-organized. The staff was friendly and provided a positive environment for the students to enjoy their meals.”

“The consultant was impressed by the middle school’s colorful selections of fruits and vegetables at the salad bar, and the high quality of the food served in our district,” said Christopher Woofter, the district’s director of operations and strategic initiatives.

Administrative reviews of school food service programs are conducted once every three years.

“Food Service Supervisor Marti Jacobson and her team put a great deal of work into the planning and preparation for this annual review,” said Woofter. “This is another confirmation that the department demonstrates a high level of dedication.”

Students Learn Self Defense Strategies

Eighteen ninth-grade girls participated in self-defense training March 22 as part of the Ruling Our Experiences (R.O.X.) program that is being offered at Chagrin Falls High School.

CFHS counselor Julie Beckerman, teacher Amanda Heintzelman and Det. Jessica Page, from the Shaker Heights Police Department, guided the girls through various self-defense strategies.

Both Beckerman and Heintzelman received training in the R.O.X. program in December.

“Utilizing the high school’s Tiger Periods during the third and fourth quarter, R.O.X. is designed to reach girls during a critical time in their development,” said Heintzelman. “It provides a place for these young women to develop the necessary skills they need to effectively navigate throughout their adolescent years.”

The curriculum incorporates experiences, strategies and interventions that have demonstrated efficacy through research, and have been shown to promote positive changes in the lives of girls.

Part of the 20-week evidence based empowerment program is teaching the girls self-defense strategies.

“We want girls to understand that they have the right and the ability to keep themselves safe and that is one way that they can rule their experiences,” Heintzelman said.
