Recipients to be recognized at May 10 BOE meeting
Cardinal Schools is on a bit of a roll. Last week, voters passed the district’s first new money levy since 1992. This week, the district announced two teachers and one student were recognized by education administrators in Geauga and Lake counties for their work.
CHS Language Arts and College Credit Plus instructor Maureen Fowler has been selected as the Geauga County Innovative Teacher of the Year by the Geauga County Educational Service Center.
Fowler has been at Cardinal for nine years and in that time has been instrumental in integrating technology and 21st century skills into her classrooms through the College Ready Ohio program.
She regularly presents to staff about incorporating technology and better ways of teaching and assessing by having students apply the skills they’ve learned by creating meaningful content.
“Maureen has been a leader in helping our staff transform the way they teach in the classroom,” said high school Interim Principal Andy Cardinal, who nominated Fowler.
For her distinction, Fowler has been awarded a $1,500 professional development grant from Kinetico.
Candi Peters, an intervention specialist at the high school, has been selected as the 2016-17 recipient of the Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award by State Support Team (SST) 4 in Lake and Geauga counties.
Peters has spent her entire 18-year teaching career at Cardinal.
“Candi does an outstanding job building a relationship with students while encouraging them to strive for the very best,” Cardinal Special Education Director Sherry Peters said.
Sherry, who nominated Candi but is of no relations, noted Candi is organized, diligent and managing extra caseloads this school year.
In addition to her classroom responsibilities, Candi also has taken a lead role on the high school Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) committee.
She received her recognition at a special awards ceremony held April 26 at the Auburn Career Center.
CHS ninth-grader Cyndle R. was recognized at the awards ceremony as being the Cardinal recipient of the R.A. Horn Outstanding Achievement Award.
Also nominated by Sherry Peters, Cyndle received the award, in part, because of her excellent work habits and independent thinking.
“Cyndle has great attendance and continues to strive for A’s in all of her classes,” Sherry said. “Her team is very proud of her growth.”
Cardinal Schools congratulates all of the award winners on their recognitions and achievements.
