Transatlantic Relationship

Advanced Placement American Government students in Ms. Anissa Smith’s class recently held a Skype session with students from the Darrick Wood School in Orpington, London. Students asked each other about the government systems and how they work as well as exploring the differences in the educational systems. The teachers used Skype to engage students in a discussion about today’s political culture.

Ovations Awards

Kenston’s Center Stage was honored by the Geauga Council for Arts and Culture at the 16th annual Ovation Awards for area high school musicals. Area directors reviewed two other school’s shows and recognized the best elements in acting, music, technical theater and a category of their choosing.

“Footloose” was honored with the following awards: Technical Achievement – Sam Kiley for his work on lighting; Vocal Award – Andrea Rengers for her vocal performance as Rusty; Acting Award – Jacob Spencer for his portrayal of Willard; and “Wild Card” Award – Kaitlin McGrath for her vocal performance as Vi.

Senior Evan Frank was recognized as the MVP of the show for his work in the crew of the musicals and dramatic performances as well as set construction. Katelyn Giebner was awarded a $500 Geauga Council for Arts and Culture Scholarship for her work as the props master throughout her high school career. 

Rotary Senior

Brett Grossman was selected Kenston’s Chagrin Valley Rotary Club Student of the Month for May. He maintains a 4.07 grade point average.

He was recognized by the Chagrin Valley Chamber of Commerce with the Student Business Leader Award. He has earned academic departmental awards in Intro to Business, Russian III and Business Management. Brett will graduate magna cum laude with an honors diploma and co-produce the senior video shown at graduation.

Brett is a four-year member of the tennis team, earning three varsity letters, honorable mention for the Western Reserve Conference and first team All-Conference honors. He is also a member of the Business Club.

Brett enjoyed performing in the National Honor Society Late Night Show and hosting the AfterProm Fashion Show. He is also known as a personality on the Weekend Weather Report.

He plans to attend The Ohio State University to study finance at the Fisher College of Business. He has also been admitted into the Media, Marketing and Communications Scholars program. 

Global Leader

Matthew Stanonis was selected to participate in the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) and was awarded a scholarship.

NSLI-Y is part of a U.S. government initiative that prepares American citizens to be leaders in a global world. Now more than ever, it is important that Americans have the necessary linguistic skills and cultural knowledge to promote international dialogue and support American engagement abroad. NSLI-Y aims to provide opportunities to American youth that will spark a lifetime interest in foreign languages and cultures.
He will study Russian in Narva, Estonia, which is just across the border from Russia, for six weeks this summer. The experience will include a minimum of 120 contact hours of intensive Russian in the classroom, as well as additional lectures, activities and excursions conducted in Russian.

Essay Contest Winner

Sophomore Maya Stupic received first place in the 10th-grade category for the Stop the Hate Essay Contest sponsored by the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage.

The essay contest was conceived, conducted and funded by the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage for the first time during the 2008-09 school year. Stop the Hate® Youth Speak Out celebrates students committed to creating a more accepting, inclusive society by reflecting on real-life situations and detailing ways to make a positive difference in the world.
