Robotics
The CMS Robotics teams had a fantastic showing at the recent AWT Juniorbots Competition. CMS sent two teams – the Silver Flames comprised of seventh-graders John A., Kaden M. and Colby T. and the Omega Fighters, which included fifth-graders Gabriel H., Anna L. and Jamie M., sixth-grader Audrey A. and eighth-grader Jacob K.
The Omega Fighters won their first two matches, lost their third and then lost their first match in the consolation bracket. They ended the day tied for ninth place out of 28 teams.
The Silver Flames went undefeated in the main bracket and then lost two matches in the semifinals, ending up in third place.
A big thank you goes to Anita Marlowe, John Avalon and CMS teacher Deena Avalon for coaching the students and Avalon Welding and Machine, LLC for donating materials for the bots. Marlowe also donated screen printing for team shirts.
Walter/Horn Awards
Cardinal High School freshman Cyndle R. and CHS teacher Candi Peters were selected as this year’s R.A. Horn Outstanding Achievement and Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator award winners for Cardinal. The awards were presented at a special ceremony held at Auburn Career Center on April 26.
Nominated by Special Education Director Sherry Peters, Cyndle received the award, in part, because of her excellent work habits and independent thinking.
Mrs. Peters says, “Cyndle has great attendance and continues to strive for A’s in all of her classes. Her team is very proud of her growth.”
Candi Peters, a high school intervention specialist, has spent her entire 18-year teaching career at Cardinal. Along with being organized, diligent and managing extra caseloads this year, Sherry says, “Candi does an outstanding job building a relationship with students while encouraging them to strive for the very best.”
Rube Goldberg
High school physics students are studying the conservation of energy and different energy types by creating a Rube Goldberg machine. The machines are complex contraptions where a series of devices perform simple tasks that are linked together to produce a domino effect. As a class assignment, students were given a scenario in which they were camping and discovered a landmine. Students had to build a Rube Goldberg machine to set the landmine off while they were far enough away to be safe. Students had opportunities to do several test runs before the final assignment on May 15.
Lawrence Bugs
Kindergarten students in Mrs. Lawrence’s classes got up close and personal with bugs recently during a science lab. Students compared various insects like bees, ants and ladybugs in their early stages to their adult stages to see how they grew and changed over time. While some insects looked fairly similar from one stage to the next, others changed dramatically and students were very surprised to see the transformations.
