Congratulations to Cardinal High School junior Hanna T. and 2017 graduates Shelby Miller, Erin Ross and Julia McIntosh on receiving scholarships from Middlefield VFW Post 9678 for their participation in the Voice of Democracy essay contest.
Students competed by writing and recording an audio essay on the topic of “My Responsibility to America.”
Hanna came in fourth place and received a $250 scholarship. Shelby finished in third and also received a $250 scholarship. Erin came in second, receiving a $500 scholarship, and Julia finished first, receiving a $1,000 scholarship. Julia also won the contest in 2016. Congratulations, ladies.
Joe Peters Pig Roast And Car Raffle
The first Joe Peters Memorial Pig Roast will be held July 15. Proceeds will benefit Cardinal pay-to-participate fees for fall activities.

Pig roast tickets can be purchased online, from any booster member or the Peters family. Tickets are limited and will sell out. Cost is $25 for adults, $10 for children under 12, and children under 3 are free.
Ticket price includes dinner and door prize entry. Entry only tickets (no dinner) are available for $10.
Dinner will be served at 4 p.m. and includes choice of pork, pulled pork, chicken, mac and cheese, potatoes, corn, baked beans, watermelon and coleslaw. All day concessions and desserts will be available for purchase.
A corn hole tournament will begin at 1 p.m. Registration is required and cost is $40 per team.
A 2017 Chevy Traverse is also being raffled off from Preston Superstore. The seven-passenger vehicle has a retail value of $43,000. Tickets for the car raffle are $50 each and can be purchased from any booster member, fall activities coach or advisor, board member, district administrator or in the Board of Education Office. The drawing for the car will be at 7 p.m.
