- Ghost Stories of the Civil War: Sept. 13, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Learn about Johnson’s Island in Sandusky Bay in the early 1900s when Italian immigrants were hired to dig limestone deposits. The island was home to a military prison for Confederate soldiers, many of whose graves now line the grassy hills. Call the senior center to register.

- Grandma Moses Painting Class: Sept. 7, 12:30 p.m. Come to an informational session on the introductory class.
- Book Club: Sept. 11, 9:30 a.m. Join the new club sponsored and run by Bainbridge Library. The first book discussion will be “Me Before You” by Jo Jo Moyes. Call the senior center to reserve the book.
American Sign Language Class
Mondays, Sept. 11 – Jan. 15
Learn the basics of sign language including the ASL alphabet, numbers, finger spelling, gestures and grammar. The 16-week class will be held every Monday from 1-2 p.m. at Chardon Senior Center.
A minimum of six seniors are needed for class to take place. Class will be cancelled if less than six people register and rescheduled at a later time. There is a 16 person maximum
Class is free. Participants will need to bring a 1 to 2-inch, three-ring binder for materials.
Call the senior center to register by Sept. 6.
AARP Smart Driver Course
Sept. 15, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Refresh driving skills and know the new rules of the road at the new AARP Smart Driver Course being held at Chardon Senior Center. Volunteer AARP instructor Vin Fiordalis will present research-based driving strategies to help seniors stay safe behind the wheel.
Bring lunch, or ask to have one provided.
Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers. Payment is given directly to the instructor the day of class.

Advanced Directives
Sept. 12, 12:30-1:30 p.m.
The Geauga County Bar Association Advance Directives Committee and Hospice of the Western Reserve will present information and answer questions regarding health care powers of attorney and living wills at the Chardon Senior Center.
They will distribute the standard forms and return on Sept. 19, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., with attorneys from the Geauga Bar to help seniors complete the forms and notarize them. It will allow seniors time to think about what they personally want and who they would want speaking on their behalf if they are unable.

Diabetes Self-Management
A six-week self-management class that focuses on diabetes will be held Thursdays, Sept. 14, 21, 29, Oct. 5, 19 and 26 at Chagrin Falls Senior Center. During each two and one-hour class, seniors will get support, find practical ways to deal with pain, fatigue and sugar control, discover better nutrition and exercise choices, understand new treatment choices and learn better ways to communicate with doctors and family about one’s health.
The class is free to all registered Geauga County seniors, but preregistration is required by calling the senior center at 440-247-8510.
City Of Chardon Trash Collection
Sept. 27 and 28
The City of Chardon is joining forces with the Geauga County Department on Aging for the City of Chardon Trash Collection Days.
In order to be placed on the cleanup list, one must first be registered with the Geauga County Department on Aging by Sept. 20, be 60 years of age or older and live in the City of Chardon.
Unwanted items will be removed from the homes of Chardon City senior citizens Sept. 27 and 28. Universal Disposal will pick up items curbside on Sept. 30.
There is a limit of 10 items per household and all items must come from the senior’s home. All items must be clearly marked for pickup if the homeowner is not there to sign.
