Forensic Footprints

Students in Mr. Dave Bronson’s forensic science classes recently conducted a lab where they used cooking spray and cocoa powder to identify shoe prints.

First, the bottom of the “suspect” shoe was sprayed with cooking spray, then pressed down onto white paper. Students used a small paintbrush to apply a small amount of cocoa powder to the wet area with a dabbing motion and then blew away the excess powder to reveal a footprint.

Students were able to use their samples to identify a particular shoe from a small partial print.
