Monarchs Take Flight

First-graders in Mrs. Biro’s class witnessed the miraculous transformation of monarch butterflies in enrichment class taught by Sr. Barbara Soplata, SND.

In honor of Notre Dame Elementary School’s 60th anniversary, 60 caterpillars were collected from the butterfly garden and hay fields on the NDES campus. Each week, the students observed changes as the caterpillars grew into beautiful monarchs. The butterflies will be set free to make their long migration to Mexico for the winter.

Students Take Procedure Challenge

Mrs. Niksa’s fifth-graders are learning the basic concepts of the scientific process. The procedure challenge invites students to practice writing detailed experiment procedures. In doing so, they learn the importance of clear communication in scientific exploration as well as all disciplines.

Big Bubble Experiment

Eighth-grade students in Mrs. Long’s class used the scientific method to find out how big bubbles are made. The day before the big experiment, students worked collaboratively to construct a hypothesis. Then, they applied their research, tested their solutions and found answers to their “mind bubbling” questions.
