Student’s Opinion Featured
Fourth-grader Elisabeth M. recently had her opinion published and featured on the WVIZ / PBS ideastream Education program “News Depth.”
NewsDepth is an award-winning instructional multiple media product that connects students to Ohio’s New Learning Standards. Each week, students from across the state submit an opinion on various topics through the program’s inbox. Elisabeth’s thoughts on being tardy to school were featured on the website for the program’s second episode.
She wrote, “I think there should be a consequence for being tardy to school. The consequence, I believe, should be an extra page of homework for being late to school. I believe this is a wonderful consequence because being late means your teacher may have assigned homework that is very important and for a side dish of knowledge a few extra questions to even it out. I also believe this is a terrific idea because you have missed a little bit of class and will need to make up in some way. The last reason I feel that extra homework is a nice reason, is you missed some of the class which also means you missed out on some learning that helps you stay smart. That is why I feel there should be some form of punishment for being tardy to class.”
Elisabeth says she was very excited to hear that her opinion had been selected, adding she worked extremely hard and long to get her thoughts together on the subject.
JES Café Named “Place To Be”
Congratulations to Janis Benton, food service director, on being recognized by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) Office of Child Nutrition for making the Jordak Elementary School cafeteria “the place to be.”
ODE put out a “tell us your story” request to districts across the state on how food service professionals make the school cafeteria the place to be. After a difficult review process, the office selected five stories to be shared throughout National School Lunch Week – including Miss Benton’s story on JES.
In her entry, Benton wrote, “While all the cafeterias in Cardinal Local School District are places to be, the AJ Jordak Elementary cafeteria is the best place for students grades K-4. The cafeteria staff loves to find reasons to dress up, serve themed menus and even sing songs. You may even catch us doing the conga line! We do giveaways and special treat days to get kids to join in the fun! We plan to speak like pirates one day very soon. We also work in fun books and learning about food and nutrition. We like to have fun!”
Way to go Ms. Benton and all of the staff that make Jordak, CMS and CHS cafeterias awesome.
Health Fair Scares
There was a little something for everyone at Cardinal’s annual wellness fair on Oct. 13.
To correspond with Friday the 13th, this year’s fair featured a Halloween theme with the underlying message to not let one’s health get scary. Around two dozen health, wellness and financial vendors filled the middle school gym to provide attendees information on how to take care of themselves.
Flu shots were provided by CVS and UH Geauga also provided biometric screenings. An area sectioned off in the middle of the gym allowed children, many of whom dressed in costume, an area to play games and try to guess what mystery food item was in the box by feeling it.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s event; it was a great success.
