Bird in the Hand Feeding Station

Winter is a great time to observe birds, and what better place to observe them than the comfortable, serene wildlife feeding station at the West Woods Nature Center in Russell Township. Geauga Park District’s Bird in the Hand Project allows people to feed the wild birds by hand.

Follow signs from the nature center to the Bird in the Hand Feeding Station, back for a fourth exciting season. Stop in the nature center from 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to collect some black oil sunflower seed; otherwise, use a little from the feeder already placed onsite. Hand-feeding works best with just one or two people or in a small group of up to four.

Visitors will come upon the feeding station marked by a feeder and a mannequin, “Parker,” who keeps the birds familiar with a human presence.

Take down the feeder, hide it under the bucket, extend one’s hand with some seed in one’s palm, and then wait.

Turkey Trottin’ Scavenger Hunt
