History has been made in the Cardinal Local School District.

District Spelling Bee

History has been made in the Cardinal Local School District. A third-grader has won the district spelling bee for the first time ever. Emily P. beat out 31 other contestants in grades 3-8 to take home the crown. She won the bee in the 11th round after correctly spelling the words “conundrum” and “facilitate.”

Emily’s fellow classmates and even some middle school students gave her a standing ovation after her victory – there were also a few happy tears and many hugs for her. She will now go on to represent Cardinal in the Geauga County Spelling Bee on Feb. 15.

Second place winner was eighth-grader Justine B., and third place went to fifth-grader Madelyn E.

Other contestants include third-graders Alaina H., Olivia C., Olivia K., Capri B. and Haylee T.; fourth-graders Riley H., Justin N., Elisabeth M., Sam G., Bethany C. and Grayson Y.; fifth-graders Ana M., Carter T., Carter S. and Troy C.; sixth-graders Jamie M., Ryan N., Carlie W., Emilea M. and Angelina J.; seventh-graders Gavin B., Hennessey M., Andrew T. and Brooke T.; and eighth-graders Conner C., Grace P., Matthew M., Sarah S. and Chloe S.

Underwater Robotics Team

The CMS underwater robotics group is diving into their big project. Three of the group’s members – Owen V., Hailey H. and Michael M. – were hard at work recently, waterproofing motors with volunteer advisor Christine Schroeter.

Thanks to an $890 grant from FirstEnergy, the group is working to build four underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) through the US Navy’s SeaPerch Program. Once the ROVs are completed, the group will work with the Geauga Park District to use them for water quality sampling.

Olaf Visits For Breakfast

Students at Jordak Elementary School had a special visitor at breakfast Jan. 18 – Olaf. The friendly snowman braved the warmth inside the cafeteria to spend time visiting and giving hugs to students who wanted them. His visit was part of a special day planned by the cafeteria staff to encourage more students to try the school breakfast.

All students received a baggie of marshmallows and pretzels to use to “build a snowman,” and some lucky students even won Frozen themed prizes. It was a great way to start everyone’s day.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration for the 2018-19 school year will be held on March 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Jordak Elementary School.

To enter kindergarten, students must be 5 years of age on or before July 31, 2018.

Registration packets are available on the district website (cardinalschools.org) or in the JES and BOE offices. Please make sure all forms are filled out completely and that you have all of the required documentation.

Registration will be done by appointment only. Call the JES office at 440-632-0261 ext. 2000 to schedule a time.
