Rotary Student of the Month
Chagrin Falls High School senior Anna Sherman has been selected as the February Chagrin Valley Rotary Student of the Month. Sherman was chosen based on her leadership and service qualities she has displayed in her community.
Sherman has been the recipient of several awards during her high school career. These include 2017 Emperor Science Award and 2017 Rensselaer Medalist. She also has been two-time gold key and one time honorable mention winner for the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards (2014-2015). Sherman has also been a three-time state qualifier and one-time national qualifier as a member of the Speech and Debate team from 2016 to 2018.
In her time at CFHS, Sherman has been involved with Link crew (2016-2017), Speech and Debate (2015-2018) and Prism (2018). She also has been involved with many extracurricular activities including attending Duke University Talent Identification Program for astronomy (2015) and Michigan Math and Science Scholars (MMSS) program in field biology (2016).
Sherman interned at a lab within the department of neurosurgery at Case Western Reserve University as part of the Emperor Science Award experience this past summer. Over winter break, she volunteered at a lunch program for inner-city students, which sparked her desire to plan on volunteering more with food charities in the future.
Outside of school, Sherman enjoys reading, calligraphy writing, watercolor painting and writing poems and short stories. She also conducts her own informal neuroscience research by reading articles and watching videos.
Her accelerated classes include AP Seminar, AP English Language, AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, AP English Literature, AP Statistics, AP Psychology and AP Chemistry.
After high school, Sherman plans to attend The Ohio State University where she will major in biology on the pre-medicine track.
Student Athletes Attend Development Conferences
The Chagrin Valley Conference, in partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance, created a conference to foster sportsmanship and leadership development among student athletes. Each school in the Chagrin Valley Conference sent a group of high school and middle school students to Beachwood High School in October and again for a follow-up conference in January.
Students who attended were chosen to go by fall coaches. Coaches choose students based upon their leadership and sportsmanship skills and their ability to positively represent Chagrin Falls Schools.
The theme of each workshop focused on the idea of being a triple threat competitor. This means a competitor who works to better his or her self, his or her teammates, as well as his or her sport. The same group of students attended both conferences in order to have consistency and foster comradery between the competitors and schools.
Those who attended the conference include: Allie Kovatch, Lucy Fricke, Kelly Wynveen, Mikala Izzo, Ben Winovich, Aiden Stephens, Andrew Guggenheim, Mason Bartlett, Kendall Guddy, Elizabeth Rankin, Aubrey Daugherty, Evan Johnson, Zach Muckle, Camille Zitney, Gillian Geber, Zachary Neimeier and Lucky Deignan.
On Jan. 27, a group of Chagrin Falls middle and high school coaches spent the morning with Joe Terrasi from the Positive Coaching Alliance to learn and share ideas about leadership development for student athletes. The workshop was made possible with funding from the Chagrin Falls Booster Club and Chagrin Falls Educational Foundation, separate from the Chagrin Valley Conference Partnership.
National Merit Finalists
Five Chagrin Falls High School students have been named finalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are Mason Bartlett, Sam Gaizutis, Trevor Stevenson, Erik Wilson and Lucy Ranieri. Letters to finalists’ homes were mailed on Feb. 12.
About 15,000 of the 16,000 semifinalists named in September 2017 have met all requirements to advance to finalist standing in the competition. All finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2018.
The selection committee is composed of college admission officers and high school guidance directors and counselors who work in pairs to evaluate the scholarship applications of finalists on a state-by-state basis. Committee members review all of the finalist applications and consider each student’s academic record (including course load, rigor, depth and breadth of subjects studied, and grades earned); the student’s self-descriptive essay, activities, leadership, employment, and contributions to the school and community; in addition to the high school official’s letter of recommendation. The scholars selected by the committee are those determined to have the strongest combination of attributes and accomplishments and the greatest potential for future success in college studies and beyond.
