Backcountry Heron Hike
March 17, 1-3 p.m.
Venture off trail at Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve with a park district naturalist to the site of a heron nesting colony for possible views of returning great blue herons.
At 15681 Old Rider Road, Burton Wetlands is a new location for the park district’s annual heron hike, offering all-new views of an established nesting site just across the parks’ border. The hike also visits parts of the park rarely seen by park visitors to the nature preserve.
Participants should prepare for a roughly two-mile round-trip hike to and from the nesting site, as well as wet, muddy conditions with uneven terrain. Registration is required.
