Science Experiments
Mr. Zurbuch is up to his science tricks again in Ms. Janice Maxwell’s first-grade class. Recently, student scientists discovered what happens when water and air mix (or don’t mix).
For one experiment, students filled a small plastic beaker with water, placed a playing card over top of it and then turned the beaker over while holding the card in place with one finger. Once the water was upside down, students took their finger off the card and discovered that because no air was making its way into the water, the card stayed in place, acting as a stopper to keep the water in the beaker even though it was turned upside down.
The second experiment involved filling a plastic bottle with green water and then twisting another empty bottle onto the top of it. Once the bottles were firmly twisted into place, students turned the bottle over so the water was at the top. As long as students didn’t squeeze the bottle, the water stayed at the top because there was no air getting to it. Students then had to take turns moving the bottle in a circular motion and then watched as the air mixed with the water to create a tornado.
