 The Wizard of Oz

NDES Drama Club blew the roof off the house April 12-14. Under the direction of Mr. David Malinowski and in partnership with the Fine Arts Association, the students presented “The Wizard of Oz” to rave reviews.

Student actors in grades 3-8 brought to life Dorothy’s attempts to find her way back home to Kansas after a tornado blew her tiny house to the magical Land of Oz. Upon landing, she and her dog Toto are helped by the Good Fairy of the North, but also find trouble with the Wicked Witch of the West. As she travels along the yellow brick road, Dorothy makes friends with a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin Man who needs a heart and a cowardly lion who needs courage.

Preparation for the production began in September with students meeting each week after school.

Junior High Book Club

Students in the junior high book club elective taught by Mrs. Susan Hayward visited the kindergarten last week to read to and listen to the school’s young, emerging readers. In addition to sharing the joy of reading, students began the semester with “Tangerine” by Edward Bloor – a realist fiction book about soccer, football and handicaps written in diary form. From there, students have added more books to the list based on their interests.

New this year, the Junior High Elective Program is an academic enhancement offered at NDES. In this program, students in grades seven and eight may participate in two additional courses per semester. Class offerings are available for every interest from literature to photography, cooking and coding.
