 Little Free Libraries

Six new Little Free Libraries have found homes in Geauga Park District, thanks to a group of women with a passion for literacy, Women United of United Way Services of Geauga County.
Anyone is now welcome to take a book home from the new weatherproof libraries at Bass Lake Preserve, Swine Creek Reservation, The West Woods, The Maple Highlands Trail’s South Street entrance, Big Creek Park and Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve.

Women United, a group formed through United Way Services of Geauga County, developed the library initiative last year, and keeps each location stocked with books donated by the Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank and community book drives.

Be An Educated Hunter

For the first time under National Rifle Association certification, Geauga Park District’s Ranger Department is offering a Wild Turkey Clinic for Beginning Hunters on May 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Big Creek Park’s Donald W. Meyer Center.

Admission will be limited to 10 students. Registration required.

Students of any age will be permitted and need not have a current hunting license to attend, but all must take a hunter education class and obtain a current hunting license in order to actually hunt.

Explore The Gorge

Registration is now open for a rain-or-shine adventure into the rocky woodland ravines of Welton’s Gorge, a Geauga Park District preserve in Burton Township.

Backcountry Ravine Exploration hike was set for May 12, from 1-4 p.m., but due to the popularity of the program a second morning hike has been added from 9 a.m. to noon. Directions to the property will be provided upon registration at the new www.geaugaparkdistrict.org or 440-286-9516.

Frog Fest “Party Line”

Register one’s name on the call list of this Nature’s Not To Be Missed program to witness the natural phenomenon of spring breeding behavior of gray tree frogs and green frogs at The West Woods.

Once registered, expect a call sometime in May the late afternoon on the day of the program, or possibly the day before, and choose appropriate clothing and flashlights for the visit. Program activities will be held 8-9:30 p.m. that night.

Expect short notice because the decision is based on the amount and timing of rain, temperature and more.

Call For Artists: Nature Arts Festival

Geauga Park District welcomes exhibitors of nature-inspired artwork to apply for space in its 27th Annual Nature Arts Festival on Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Big Creek Park in Chardon Township.

The event is co-marketed with the Chardon Square Arts Festival to attract maximum attendance to both events, with a free 5-minute Lolly the Trolley ride connecting them. Exhibitor information can be found on the park district website or at The West Woods Nature Center, open daily 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Applicants must submit at least four images of their artwork for jurying, including one of their display. Spaces are available indoors and outdoors. Wildlife artwork will be given preference over artwork depicting domestic animals.
