In an effort to bolster the imperiled Monarch butterfly population, Geauga Park District is again propagating native milkweed, and is giving plants away for free on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

Give The Gift Of Milkweed

In an effort to bolster the imperiled Monarch butterfly population, Geauga Park District is again propagating native milkweed, and is giving plants away for free on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

Stop by The West Woods Nature Center on May 13 or June 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to get a free milkweed plant and learn how, where and when to plant it on one’s property.

Pots, often holding multiple plants, will be limited to one per family on a first-come, first-served basis. Call Tami Gingrich at 440-279-0811 with questions.

A Look into the Lives of Ohio’s Peregrine Falcons

May 15, 7-8:30 p.m.

The West Woods, Nature Center

Chad and Chris Saladin provide insights into the behavior and ecology of peregrine falcons as witnessed over their years of monitoring them at Ohio nesting sites, both officially for the Ohio Division of Wildlife and on their own once that project ended in 2015, featuring a special appearance by Cliff, a live peregrine courtesy of Lake Metroparks. Collaboration with Blackbrook Audubon Society.

Out On The Water

Plan to borrow a kayak for free at the Headwaters Park Boathouse beginning June 6. Details will be posted as they’re available on the park district website. Or for a more structured experience, register by phone at 440-286-9516 to join a naturalist on any of the following guided floats:

Kayaking is also a beloved part of park district’s annual summer camps, offered for youth entering grades 5-7 the weeks of June 25, July 9, July 16, July 30 and Aug. 6 and for teens entering grades 8-10 the weeks of June 18 and July 23 and in single-day “X-treme kayak challenge” form on July 2 and 5.

Astronomy Nights with CVAS

Join members of the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society to ignite interest and excitement about the amazing night sky by observing it in a couple special parks.

Astronomy Nights with CVAS will be hosted at Swine Creek Reservation in Middlefield on May 19, from 8-11 p.m., and at Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve in Munson on June 16, from 8:30-11:30 p.m.

A variety of telescopes will be on hand for everyone to use, offering opportunities to get a closer look at objects in the night sky. Activities will be canceled if cloudy; call 440-279-0880 the day of the program after 3 p.m. to check their status.
