One School, One Book

All students in Jordak Elementary School will be reading “Flora & Ulysses” through May 18 for the One School, One Book reading program.

On April 18, each class took a scavenger hunt through the school, following clues and looking for characters or scenes from the book. The book from the number one New York Times best-selling author Kate DiCamillo is about Flora stepping in at just the right time to try to save Ulysses the squirrel from tragedy. Throughout their adventure, Ulysses develops powers of strength, flight and misspelled poetry, and cynical Flora discovers the possibility of hope and the promise of a capacious heart.

Students were so excited to discover the characters and various settings around the building and are enjoying their reading assignments. A big thank you to Kenston schools for sharing their props and some books with us for this special occasion, to the Cardinal PTA for their support in bringing this project to life; and to all of our wonderful staff members who helped decorate the building so it was perfect and ready for the pups when they arrived at school.

THIRD GRADERS EXPLORE PLANT LIFE CYCLES AT HOLDEN ARBORETUM

Third-graders braved the cold and rain/snow on April 16 to take a field trip to The Holden Arboretum to explore the life cycle of a plant. While there, they put knowledge learned in the classroom about the changes that occur during plant growth to observe real life plants in various stages. Students traveled around the arboretum, exploring and noting growth stages like seedling, flowering and fruiting in a variety of plants.
