8th-graders Visit Washington, D.C.

On April 24, NDES students embarked on the annual eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C. Upon their arrival, the students visited the Iwo Jima Memorial and the Arlington Cemetery. At the Arlington Cemetery, students witnessed the laying of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron.

The next day, they toured many sites in the nation’s capital including the Lincoln Memorial, Pentagon, Korean and Vietnam memorials. At the Capitol Building, students met with U.S. Rep. David Joyce. On the final day, students toured the battlefields at Gettysburg and visited the Flight 93 Memorial where they honored and remembered all the heroes of that fateful day with a prayer service along with a wreath and signed NDES Class of 2018 shirt before returning home.

4th-Grade Business Fair

After months of hard work, fourth-graders used their entrepreneurial skills at the annual NDES Business Fair on April 26, raising $2,237 for the Well Project in Africa.

As a culminating activity in Mr. Steve Cavolo’s social studies class, students studied basic economic concepts and applied them to a real business situation. To prepare for the event, students designed a product to create and sell. To begin, they determined the price based on setup costs and projected profits. Then, they developed persuasive advertising posters and sales pitches. All NDES students had the opportunity to shop for a variety of handmade products that were priced between $1 and $5.

Students Develop Food Flavored Gum

In the third-grade STEM class, Dr. Susan and Mr. Kyle Rhodes of Avery Dennison spoke with students on all the stages of manufacturing a product from scientific design and development to packaging and marketing. In groups, the students were “commissioned” by Mr. Willie Wonka to develop a “food-flavored gum.” Using worksheets, students walked through the process of developing and marketing a food flavored gum that would appeal to a group of consumers.
