Shot Put Record Broken

It’s a new record for the track team at Cardinal Middle School. Eighth-grader Mike S. has set a new record in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 9 inches at a meet on May 7. It marks the third time Mike has broken the record this year.

Mike broke the original record set in 1991 of 42-5 back on April 18 with a throw of 42-11. He went on to break that record at the very next meet with a throw of 43-7 and now this most recent record. Mike’s 43’ throw was good enough to qualify for the OHSAA Middle School State Track Meet on May 12. CMS track coach Luke Kruse says Mike is a hard worker that takes his technique seriously. His efforts are paying off.

Art Students Win Awards

Several Cardinal High School students placed in the Middlefield Historical Society Student Art Show. Jillian H. won first place honors and Jonathon Z. earned second place. Earning honorable mentions were: Joey B., Mackenzie C., Marina C., Kaylee H., Emily K., Hannah L., Brittni L., Katlyn L. (3), Megan M., Adriana N., Gina P., Abby P., Daisy R., Anne R., Shannon S., Alyssa W., Megan Z. and Jonathan Z. (2).

Opinions Featured On PBS

Jordak fourth-graders are on a roll with their opinions this year. Two more students had their thoughts featured on the WVIZ/PBS ideastream program NewsDepth. They mark the seventh and eighth students to be featured.

Madison F. and Matthew D. wrote about how they can help the Earth. They said, “A good way we can help the earth would be by putting filters of top of the factory smoke stacks to filter out the pollutants and keep the air clean. The way this helps is because we would not breathe in the smoke.”

The pair could not believe it when they saw their opinion featured in class and were extremely grateful for teacher Mrs. Torre’s help in crafting their response.

Good Behavior Leads To Fun

Positive behaviors pay off for 131 students at Cardinal High School who got a day off from learning on May 3 and instead had fun all day. At the beginning of the semester a hashtag campaign rolled out that encouraged students to exhibit the positive behaviors they learn about as part of the Huskie Pride PBIS rubric. There were five hashtags rolled out throughout the semester and those who collected at least one hashtag in each of the five categories got to participate in a day of fun.

There was a gaming area where students were allowed to play video games, a movie room and open gym for athletic activities. Students also won prizes and participated in an epic student versus staff volleyball game at the end of the day. Students won the battle three games to two.

Several prizes were also raffled off to students who earned their hashtags and included water bottles, Huskie gear, snacks, a $200 speaker donated by RadioActive Electronics, a pair of Cleveland Indians tickets and an iTunes gift card.
