Five Cardinal High School students have earned official certification as Microsoft Office Specialists by passing rigorous application-specific examinations at Trumbull Career & Technical Center. They prepared by taking the Computer Applications and Microsoft Office Specialists courses at the high school – becoming certified is part of the requirement of taking the course.

Students who are now certified in either Word, PowerPoint, Excel, a combination of the group or all three, include senior Regena Y., junior Alyssa S. and sophomores Chase M., Jacob Z. and Josiah Z.

Certified Microsoft Office Specialists have a fundamental understanding of an application’s environment and the ability to complete tasks independently. In Word 2016, they create and edit two- to three-page documents for a variety of purposes and situations. Document examples include professional-looking reports, multi-column newsletters, résumés and business correspondence. In Excel 2016, they create and edit a workbook with multiple sheets, and they use a graphic element to represent data visually. Workbook examples include professional-looking budgets, financial statements, team performance charts, sales invoices and data-entry logs. In PowerPoint 2016, they edit, and enhance presentations and slide shows. Presentation examples include professional-grade sales presentations, employee training, instructional materials and kiosk slide shows.

Robobots Competition

It was an exciting day on Saturday for several middle school students – two teams of sixth- through eighth-graders participated in the AWT RoboBots JuniorBots Competition. Out of 27 teams from both Lake and Geauga counties, one of Cardinal’s teams brought home third place and the other finished 10th after being knocked out in the fourth round of competition.

Members of the third place team, Steel Spartans, included John A., Ethan D., Kaden M., Ty S. and Colby T. Their robot, Spartacus, also received the competition’s Best Engineered Bot award.

The 10th place team, Toxic Spinners, included Gabe H., Joseph K., Jamie M. and Michael W. They named their bot Hammerhead.

Group advisor and middle school math teacher Deena Avalon says she is so proud of the group for their efforts adding they all did a great job and had fun. In addition to Mrs. Avalon, the middle school thanks John Avalon, Anita Marlowe and Claire Zurbuch for volunteering their time to advise the group, as well as Avalon Welding and Machine, LLC for being the industry sponsor.
