Geauga County National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers support, education and advocacy for those affected by mental illness.
NAMI Basics is a free, six-week education program for parents and caregivers of school age youth who are experiencing mental challenges. The free class will meet Tuesdays, Sept. 4 through Oct. 9, from 12-2:30 p.m., at Geauga County YMCA, 12460 Bass Lake Road, Chardon.
Growth Through Grief support group is designed to guide loved ones through their journey to find hope and healing after suicide. The free, open group meets the second Wednesday of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. A free, closed eight-week session is held on the first and third Wednesday of each month, starting in October, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Meetings are held at NAMI Geauga, 107 South St., Suite 5 in Chardon. Registration is required for the closed group only.
Family to Family is a free, 12-week education class for family members or loved ones of a person with a mental health condition. Class runs Thursdays, Oct. 4 to Dec. 20, from 6 8:30 p.m. at NAMI Geauga Annex, 107 South St., Suite 5 in Chardon.
Mental Health First Aid is an eight-hour training that gives people the tools to identify when someone might be struggling with a mental health or substance abuse problem and to connect them with the appropriate support and resources when needed. It will be held Oct. 6 in the NAMI community room, 107 South St., Suite 6, Chardon.

Active Parenting Classes
Sept. 5, 12, 19 and 26
Family Pride of Northeast Ohio, Inc. is offering two Active Parenting classes for parents and caregivers.
The group class for parents of children ages 5-12 will meet from 6-8 p.m. at Family Pride’s Chardon office located at 695 South St., Suite 6. Learn ways to raise responsible children who are able to resist negative peer pressure, improve communication and utilize non-violent discipline techniques.
The group class for parents of teenagers meets from 5-8 pm; at Family Pride’s Ashtabula office located at 525 Lake Ave. Learn what is going on in a teen’s head and learn to improve communication, encourage responsibility and discipline effectively.
Food is provided. Child care is available with prior registration.
