Celebration on the Chagrin
Sept. 16, 1-5 p.m.
Celebrate 50 years of Ohio’s Scenic Rivers Program at Bass Lake Preserve, a designated scenic river site and natural lake on the headwaters of the Chagrin River. Local resource professionals will be onsite to lead a variety of aquatic adventures for the whole family, including canoeing, fishing, strolls through Spring Brook Sanctuary, stream life sampling, and encounters with anticipated sightings of Chagrin watershed wildlife, including Ohio’s treasured native brook trout.
The collaborative event is co-presented by Geauga Park District, the Geauga Soil & Water Conservation District, ODNR Division of Parks & Watercraft, the Scenic Rivers Program and many other conservation partners who will be represented with table displays.
Advanced registration is required for canoe floats, ages 12 and up, two people per canoe, with basic canoe handling skills required. Just For Seniors
Registration is required for Elderberries: Strolling in Fields of Gold taking place Sept. 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Orchard Hills Park in Chester Township. Intriguing insects will dominate the day’s animal activity, with native pollinators – bees, beetles and butterflies. EZ Go Cart tours will be available, and lunch will be served in the shelter.
Programming is co-presented by Geauga Park District, the Geauga Department on Aging and University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center. Activities are partially wheelchair accessible.
Park district naturalists will also lead the final Geauga Walkers hike of the season on Sept. 25 from 1-2:30 p.m. at Headwaters Park. Registration is not required.
Scout Days
Sept. 22, 9-11 a.m.
Scouts of all ages are invited to stop by Claridon Woodlands, 11383 Claridon Troy Road, for an open-house scavenger hunt to discover the new park’s unique features. Check in at the pavilion for a discovery program, then take a self-guided exploration throughout the 127-acre park. Registration is not required. Activities can be done individually or with a troop.
Claridon Woodlands’ first-come first-served ropes course will also be available to explore 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Trail Horse Nature Challenge
Sept. 22, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Those with horses are invited to challenge themselves and their horses on a one-to-two hour challenge course with natural trail obstacles and questions about nature along park trails at Swine Creek Reservation. Awards and certificates will be given in youth and adult divisions.
Helmets are recommended. Upon arrival, participants will be assigned departure times in advance in order of registration and will ride out individually or in pairs at a leisurely pace, as time is not a factor in the event. Riders may also choose to continue park exploration independently once they have completed the course.
