Experiencing Electives at NDES

Exploring passions and developing talents offers tremendous opportunities for NDES junior high students beyond the traditional classroom. Each semester, students have a chance to sign up for two elective courses according to their interests. A few of the first semester offerings include rock band, choir, movie soundtracks, advanced physical education, Photoshop, instant challenge, Journey with Jesus, photography and illustration/painting.

Kinesthetic Approach to Reading, Writing

Students preschool through second grade are using Phonics in Motion and Wilson Fundations to learn and understand sounds.

“We marry the two programs together to help reach all students. Everyone learns with different modalities, so using Phonics in Motion and Fundations together helps to reach oral, visual and kinesthetic learners at the same time,” says Mrs. Looman.

Students use magnet tile boards, dry erase boards, drill sounds, writing notebooks, hand motions, and a special puppet named Echo in their phonics lessons. Emily Weiner is pictured above using a magnet tile board. Kindergarten students are well on their way to being amazing readers.
