Professional Development Focuses on Gifted Students
At a recent professional development session, Westwood teachers in grades three through five received training in teaching students identified as gifted.
“During the training, our teachers learned how to plan lessons and write education plans to address learning goals for gifted students,” said Deborah Nanney, principal of Westwood Elementary.
Understanding how to plan and teach students on all areas of the spectrum helps instructors to best respond to the learning needs of children as they progress through the West Geauga curriculum.
Students Win 2nd Place in NASA Challenge
West Geauga’s Eileen Faulk and Rosie Fahey captured second place in NASA Glenn Research Center’s 2018 Microgravity Expulsion from Water Experiments Challenge. Their work has earned them an invitation to present at the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research (ASGSR) conference in Washington, D.C., in November.
To earn their spot, the students had to design an object that would sink under normal gravitational forces, but that would be expelled from water during free fall during testing at the 2.2 Second Drop Tower located at the Glenn Research Center.
Faulk and Fahey’s invitation to the ASGSR conference was based on their hypothesis, results and written report.
Children’s Hunger Alliance
The Children’s Hunger Alliance recently visited Lindsey Elementary School to provide some recommendations to help increase breakfast participation among the students.
There are many students who come from food-insecure households. Leveraging the expertise of the Children’s Hunger Alliance gives the district new ways to serve students who need assistance.
West Geauga offers a free and reduced breakfast and lunch program to students who need assistance throughout the school year.
Community Dialogue Meeting
The next community meeting for the Master Planning process will be held Nov. 13 from 6-8 p.m. in the West Geauga Middle School cafeteria. Survey results and facility options will be discussed.
