A Blue Ribbon School
One of the criteria for a Blue Ribbon School is academic excellence that can be seen throughout the curriculum. In addition to strong test scores, Blue Ribbon Schools engage students in a variety of ways, including hands-on interactive learning.
Kindergarten students in Mrs. Looman’s class have a special STEM based show and tell project each week called the Maker Mat project. Students create their project at home and then explain both the product and the process during their sharing time. They also have STEM bins in the classroom with different manipulatives for design and building.
Students in Mrs. Biro’s first-grade class designed their own airplanes. They went through the process that a good scientist does: ask a question, form a hypothesis, test the hypothesis, record observations and then come to a conclusion. Students began with the question, “How can I make a paper airplane only using a piece of paper?” After many trials, they concluded that an airplane flies the best if it has a sharp point and tight wings. If some of the planes did not fly well, the students went back to their first question and asked, “How can I design my plane differently in order for it to fly better or faster?”
Colin Boland Memorial Run
On Oct. 11, runners and walkers, big and small, honored the memory of Colin Boland. All proceeds support the Colin Boland Memorial, which assists two families each year with a scholarship to NDES along with other many special charities close to the family’s heart.

It was a great season for all the cross country student-athletes. State championships are right around the corner.
Alumni Share Their Gifts
Emma Scott, a former NDES and NDCL student, visited last week to share her passion for environmental science, specifically her studies of the Lake Erie water snake. She introduced students to several different snake species and her research and experiences at the Ohio Sea Grant Stone Laboratory.
The school also welcomed Maliyah Loiczly, who graduated from NDES last school year, to read to students in kindergarten through third grade for Bully Prevention Month. Maliyah was recently crowned USA National Miss Cardinal State Junior Teen 2019. Viola Loiczly, who attends kindergarten at NDES, was crowned as the new American Royal Beauties for the entire Midwest of her Princess division and was awarded Community Service Leader, as well. Both will go on to Nationals.
