8th-Graders Visit Metroparks

Eighth-graders took a field trip to the Twinsburg Ledges and Nature Center at Liberty Park, which is a part of the Summit County Metroparks. The trip followed their unit in earth science, where they learned about glaciers, landforms, weathering and erosion.

Science teacher Tammy Mrofchak planned the outdoor adventure for students to make real life connections between their academic knowledge and a hands-on experience. Students had the chance to identify constructive and destructive geological processes that formed Earth’s surface in their own community.

Throughout their time on the trip, students hiked and recognized major geological processes of erosion and deposition. They also saw patterns and features of streams, discharge rates and gradients and were able to identify glacial features in the ledges of the park.

Aside from the scientific portion of the trip, students tuned an artistic eye to the Metroparks as a connection to their art class with art teacher Amy Fenton. While hiking, students looked for a subject in nature that displayed the principles of art, including balance, emphasis, movement, proportion, rhythm, pattern, unity and variety.

At the end of the trip, students had hiked an average of 20,000 steps.
