Scholastic Arts & Writing Competition Award Winners
Students from Chagrin Falls middle and high schools will be recognized at the Scholastic Art and Writing Exhibition at The Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA). Student’s works of art that received a gold or silver award will be on display for the public in the Reinberger Gallery of the CIA from Jan. 22 – Feb. 1. Exhibition hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Saturday through Sunday from 12-5 p.m. Student’s works of art that received an honorable mention will be displayed digitally on a screen in the gallery.
The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, identifies teenagers with outstanding artistic and literary talent and brings their work to a national audience through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Every year, the Alliance partners with more than 100 visual arts and literary arts organizations across the country to bring the awards to local communities. Teens in grades seven through 12 can apply in 29 categories of art and writing. Submissions are judged by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that show originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
Last year, more than 1,800 students submitted more than 3,100 pieces of artwork and writing samples for judging. Gold Key winners continue on to the national competition in New York City.

CFMS Medieval Quest
The seventh-graders at Chagrin Falls Middle School recently went on a quest for knowledge. The students in the Honors English class read “The Squire’s Tale” by Gerald Morris and “The Castle in the Attic” by Elizabeth Winthrop in their book club groups before embarking on a journey to learn more about King Arthur and his knights.
The unit began with an “Escape Room Lock Box” quest for the Holy Grail. This part of the quest used “Break Out Boxes,” which contained a backstory stating that students were brave knights from Camelot and had been attacked and taken prisoner. The boxes also contained several clues to help the students break out of the dungeon. They worked together to decode the clues to safely escape. Students figured out clues from reading a passage, watching a short historical documentary, solving a puzzle, and searching for clues in the Innovation Center, which is where their break out box quest ended.
In the Innovation Center, students created objects that symbolized a main Arthurian connection from the book. These objects were made using TinkerCad software. TinkerCad is a 3D design program used to build or edit anything imaginable. After using the internet to research a piece that went along with their story, students sent the TinkerCad files to the Makerbot 3D printer for final production. The objects they made became a part of their presentation of the Arthurian novel.
“Overall, it was an extremely interactive and fun opportunity for the students to work together in random groups and share their talents and investigating skills,” said seventh-grade English teacher Janet Adamoski.
