Sixth-Graders Debate Importance of New Year’s Resolutions

Katherine Owen´s sixth-grade language arts classes at Chagrin Falls Intermediate School held spirited debates with the proposition: “Everyone should make a New Year’s resolution.” Students worked in groups to research facts and ideas on many different websites. Then, they put information into a graphic organizer. Once they finished gathering information, they had a debate against other classmates.

During the debates, students made their best arguments and responded with rebuttals while the rest of the class watched intently knowing they would soon be acting as judges. After the two sides finished debating, they stepped out of the classroom and the remainder of the students discussed the pros and cons of the debating teams’ performances. Votes were cast and the debaters learned the results.

“Everyone did an amazing job preparing and thinking fast on their feet,” said Owen. “These debates helped set the stage for their next writing unit on argumentative essays. Students all agreed this experience was meaningful and a lot of fun.”
