SRO Builds Relationships
Officer Mark Rich is a police officer with the Chester Township Police Department. He is also the school resource officer for the West Geauga Local School District.
“Students come see me or at least stop in once a day to say hello. I really enjoy working at the school and getting to know the students. I have gotten to know most of them by interacting with them in lunchroom or greeting them in the hallways” said Officer Rich.
Working in the schools has allowed Rich to guide students in a way that he couldn’t do in the past.
He said, “I have had several students come talk to me about school issues, home issues and personal issues. I have been told by the students that they enjoy me being here because they can trust me when they come talk to me.”
Officer Rich has also had positive feedback from the parents. He said, “I’ve had a number of parents stop up to talk to me, saying how much their kids enjoy having me at the school and how their kids feel safer.”
Top Prize in Math Contest
Four teams of fifth-graders from Westwood Elementary School participated in the 38th annual Greater Cleveland Council of Math Teachers Problem Solving Tournament in Chardon. In the last two years, three groups of West Geauga fifth-graders received the top prize.
Fifth-grade math teacher Dan Reich coached the students in preparation for the contest. The event is a great way for students to implement the concepts they are learning in the classroom and to prepare for upcoming math assessments in a competitive atmosphere.
Westwood’s PTO sponsored the math teams for the past two years.
