Two West Geauga athletes were recognized by Hillcrest Insurance Group for their performance during the month of April.
Senior Jon Rash had a successful season playing second singles for the boys tennis team this year. He is currently 12-2, including 6-0 in the CVC. Over the past two seasons, his overall individual record is 30-3. He earned first team all CVC last season, and is the heavy favorite to repeat that honor this season. This will be Jon’s fourth varsity letter for tennis, and he is also a member of the marching band. He plans to study political science at the University of Akron in the fall.
Junior Torrie Gall is a 3.9 student in honors courses and takes her academics seriously. Torrie is a two-time All CVC softball player, but also a 2018 all News Herald player. Torrie is a great teammate, team leader and player who takes the game of softball very seriously. She plans to play softball in college and study nursing.
Students Experience Mock Accident
In cooperation with the Chester Township Fire Department, West Geauga students had the opportunity to experience a mock accident in preparation for prom.
Fire Chief John Wargelin said, “Other than responding to 911 emergency calls, we feel this is one of the most important things we can do for our community and especially for our young adults. Our firefighters see firsthand the devastating results that drinking and driving as well as distracted driving causes. It is my hope that if even one student took the message to heart, then the event is worth everyone’s effort.”
In addition to CTFD, other local supporters included Chester Auto Body who provided the cars and towing, Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home and Dr. Don Spaner, UH EMS coordinator, for narrating the event.
Youth Art Month
West Geauga students at all levels recently took part in special activities to celebrate the importance of the arts.
Instructor Maryann Rodin commented, “March is Youth Art Month (YAM) across the United States, and is a time for art educators to showcase their students artwork. We host a show during the senior citizens community dinner, at the Board office, and at the Geauga West library. During the shows we get the opportunity to present what we’re doing in our classrooms to the community.”
As part of the process, students submit pieces to be place at various shows.
Rodin said, “The students get very excited when their work is selected to be showcased. It also gives the students a chance to see what is going on during art class throughout the district K-12.”
