National Merit Finalist
Kenston High School senior Samuel Kress has been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Progam as a National Merit Finalist by demonstrating through distinguished performance and a high potential for future accomplishment. He will be attending the University of Kentucky.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition that honors talented U.S. high school students. Finalists are the highest-scoring program entrants in each state and represent the top 1 percent of the state’s senior students. Students qualify for recognition in the National Merit programs with their scores on the PSAT/NMSWT.
About 15,000 of the 16,000 semifinalists named in September 2018 have met all requirements to advance to finalist standing in the competition. All finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships offered in 2019. Of this group, about 7,500 seniors are awarded scholarships of $2,500 that can be renewed each college year.
Making a Difference
For the fourth year, students in Mr. Christian Barrus’ Honors and AP Physics classes have worked with the RePlay for Kids organization to adapt toys with assistive devices for children who need them. Physics students learned about basic electronics, problem-solving and the needs of children with disabilities.
Senior Justin Fuller, along with his classmates, modified 44 toys, rainbow lights, bobblehead robots, bubble camera and dancing characters for children with disabilities. This is the first year that the lab was run entirely by Mr. Barrus and his student teacher Natalie Nielsen.

President’s Award of Excellence 2019
The President’s Education Awards Program was founded in 1983 on behalf of the President of the United States and the United States Secretary of Education. The purpose of the program is to recognize and honor U.S. students in elementary, middle and high school. The program has provided individual recognition from the President and the United States and the Secretary of Education to those students whose outstanding efforts have enabled them to meet challenging standards of excellence.
