Burgers & Butterflies, Dogs & Dragons

July 7, 12-3:30 p.m.

Join the annual census to learn identification, habits and food sources of these amazing insects at Swine Creek Reservation. Participants who catch a butterfly or dragonfly get a free hamburger or hot dog.

All ages are welcome. Nets will be provided. Bring sunscreen and wear long pants.

West Woods Wednesdays

The monthly farm market returns to picnic shelters in Russell Township on the second Wednesday of each month, July to September, for a one-stop shop for all mid-week, farm-fresh needs.

In addition to vendors providing all kinds of locally made/grown items, strolling musicians will provide ambient music – Rebecca Wohlever in July and September, Jesse Hugh in August, – plus, an onsite food truck will serve dinner and snack options for purchase.

The park district is still accepting applications from interested farm market vendors, Vendor applications are available online.

Come sell antiques, collectibles, household/garage sale items, crafts and other miscellany at the 14th annual Geauga County Ohio Horseman’s Council’s benefit Flea Market, returning to the picnic shelters area of The West Woods in Russell Township.

All vendor fees benefit the Bridle Trail Fund for Geauga Park District trails and the Geauga County Chapter of the Ohio Horseman’s Council.

Vendors may pay $25 for two parking spaces or $15 for a picnic table inside the shelter.

Summer At Observatory Park

Observatory Park in Montville Township is open daily 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. through Labor Day.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing this month, an indoor presentation of “Apollo to the Moon” will be held July 12 and 26, from 7-8:30 p.m., followed by night sky viewing using park telescopes until 11 p.m., weather permitting.

Hands-on astronomy education will also be presented Aug. 9 and 23 (Make a Spectroscope) and Sept. 13 and 27 (Medieval Astronomers).

Nights Out in the Park include outside movie nights on July 27 (“Harry Potter & the Sorceror’s Stone”) and Aug. 10 (“First Man”), with activities beginning at 8 p.m. and movies starting at dusk. Free popcorn and lemonade will be provided, as well as visits from Lake Metroparks’ owls on July 27 and free ice cream treats on Aug. 10. Movies are shown indoors in case of inclement weather.

Stay late or spend the night on Aug. 12 to watch the Perseid Meteor Shower during the Meteors & Moths Overnight Event – the one night when tent camping is allowed at Observatory Park, with peak meteor time between 1-3 a.m. Check out cool moths attracted to the park’s black light and mercury vapor lamps and help sample and survey nocturnal wildlife. A naturalist will be on hand from sunset to sunrise.

Guided night sky viewing returns to the renovated Nassau Astronomical Station and its huge research-grade telescope July 13, Aug. 24 and Sept. 28, as well as Aug. 17 and Sept. 21 (Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society volunteer-led).

Enjoy full moon programs from on July 16 (The Human Moon); Aug. 15 (The Sturgeon Moon); and Sept. 14 (The Pawpaw Moon).

Kids ages 3-5 can sign up to enjoy Astrotots: Once Upon a Timeon July 19 and 20. Young people ages 6 to 11 can sign up for Nature Explorers: Meadow Insect Extravaganza on Sept. 21. And seniors can sign up for Elderberries: Heavenly Bodies Astronomy Night on Sept. 19.

“Astro-Nat” Chris will open the Robert McCullough Science Center and Oberle Observatory July 14 and 28, Aug. 25 and Sept. 29 from 1-4 p.m., all featuring The Sky Tonight Planetarium Shows at 2 p.m.
