National Merit Recognition

Chagrin Falls High School is pleased to announce that Maggie Mills, Parker Broz, Grace Lee and Ana Kevorkian have been named National Merit Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. There are approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically-talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

In addition

Chagrin Falls High School is pleased to announce that nine students have been named as National Merit Commended Scholars. They are: Carolyn Bencko, John Cashy, Alexis Christie, Tyler Feeney, Eamonn Hunter, Virginia Kanzinger, Robert Snider, Wendi Song and Tyler Stinson.

More than two-thirds of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT were named commended students. These students are named on the basis of a nationally-applied selection index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although commended students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

Volleyball Holds Dig Pink Event

The girls volleyball team at Chagrin Falls High School held a Dig Pink event at their match on Sept. 3 to raise money for a cancer foundation.

Team members from Chagrin and their opponents from West Geauga set the tone for the event by wearing pink jerseys during their match. All the proceeds from the concession stands and the raffle baskets that were created went directly to the cancer foundation called Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

This organization was founded by a young girl named Alex, who started a lemonade stand in her front yard to raise money to research cures for childhood cancer. It has since grown not only to fund research but raise awareness and support families dealing with childhood cancer. The volleyball team donated the profits to the foundation in the name of James Edmonds, a student who died last fall from cancer.

Parents of the team members baked items that were pink to sell at the concession stands and raffle baskets had themes of Halloween, Thanksgiving, movie night, and coffee/tea, which was donated by West Geauga. Among the baskets were two Cleveland Indians club seat tickets.

Overall, the volleyball team was able to raise $479 for the cause.
