National Merit Recognition

Okan Kardzhala, Jessica Kirschman and Garrett McConnell have been recognized in the 2021 College Board National Merit program as semifinalists. In the 66th annual contest, more than 1.5 million juniors in approximately 21,000 high schools entered by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT), with the top 16,000 scorers named semifinalist. Kenston’s semifinalists are now eligible to continue on in the competition to be named a finalist and receive one of more than 7,600 scholarships awarded in the spring.

Also, Kenston High School seniors Delaney Bochenek, Spencer Koch, Nicolas Sanchez, Philip Voudris, Adler Weber, Amelia Witmer-Rich and Phillip Witmer-Rich were named National Merit commended scholars for placing among the top 5 percent of PSAT participants.

Class Officers

Kenston High School Class Officers were elected by their peers. Representing the freshman class are: Brett King, president; Jackson Beclay, vice president; Sophia Alandt, secretary; and Martin Weber, treasurer. Representing the sophomore class are: Chase Tuller, president; Robert Phillips, vice president; Secretary Nicholas Lai and Samuel Koltas, treasurer.

Representing the junior class are: Lily Peters, president; Ryan Peters, vice president; Dominic Alandt, secretary; and Max Yost, treasurer. Representing the senior class are: Layla Gilbert, president; Nathan Gaskins, vice president; Alexa Busby, secretary; and Adler Weber, treasurer.

Safe School Hotline

The Ohio Department of Education has partnered up with Ohio Homeland Security to offer all Ohio school districts a safe and secure tip line. The tip line can be anonymous, or callers have the option to leave contact information. Any threatening information or suspicious activity will be assessed by the Homeland Security team to determine the level of the threat. If it’s determined to be a high-level threat, they will communicate directly with local law enforcement and the school district.

Information that is only school related, such as bullying, social media issues or other school related information, will be routed directly to the school administrators to address.

Student Honored by NATAS

Junior Zoe Doyle has been honored by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Lower Great Lakes Regional Student Production Award in the category of Public Service (PSAs) for her video “How to Avoid Phishing Scams.” Zoe wrote, illustrated, narrated and edited the video as an assignment in her digital media class last fall.
